Both in the rural and urban setting, the coffee ceremony embodies neighborliness, helping to strengthen relationships among fami- lies living close together. It is common for children to be sent by their mothers to call for neighbors to come for coffee. Referring to their elders as Etiye and Abbaba they will respectfully invite on behalf of their mothers. Participants at a coffee ceremony do not sit idle but carry out household activities such as sort cereals, spin cotton fiber, make marriage arrangements, share wedding plans, lend and borrow money. The gathering around the brazier while the hostess roasts and brews will see time passing, and as it does, a sense of companionship and intimacy is palpable. Old issues are reconciled, gossip is shared, and problems are solved.
The ceremony continues until three rounds of coffee are poured: Abol(the first), Tona(the second), and Bereka (last or blessing). This practice is common to all coffee gatherings, closely related to cus- tom and belief.
